Entrance Scholarships for JUPAS Entrants

The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics is agreed to establish  32 annual undergraduate entrance scholarships (8 scholarships for each of the following UGC undergraduate programmes – BACH, BATI, BAL, BACHM) in the University by use of the funding available in the Non-UGC Reserves (Departmental) with effect from 2009-2010.  The following regulations shall apply as of 2009/2010:

1 The award shall be known as “The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Entrance Scholarships for JUPAS Entrants”

2 Value of each scholarship shall be HK$30,000.

3 Award winners must fulfill all the following criteria:

  • Applicants shall be full-time undergraduate year 1 students who have been admitted to one of the Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Department's undergraduate programmes, i.e. BA (Honours) in Chinese, BA (Honours) in Translation and Interpretation,  BA (Honours) in Linguistics and Language Technology, and BA (Honours) in Cultural and Heritage Management.
  • Applicants must be admitted through the JUPAS route and have achieved UGC admission score at 14 or above in two A-level subjects or 1 A-level plus 2 AS-level subjects†
  • Applicants should achieve a combined score of 6 or above in the 2 language courses: AS-level Use of  English and AS-level Chinese Language & Culture, and
  • Not a recipient of the A+++ Scholarship of City University of Hong Kong

    † A Level: Grade A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2
       AS Level: Grade A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1

  • 4. Ceiling may be raised to accommodate students attaining the same GPA.

    5. Nominations from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics will reach the Student Development Services in September/October of the academic year for which the scholarships are designated.

    6. If in any year no student is found to be of sufficient merit, the award will be withheld.

    7. The Scholarship shall be offered annually until any notice of change is to be received from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

    Remark:
    With an objective to nurture our students and promote a caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU alumni club when they are in employment after graduation.  This term will be incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.

    Entrance Scholarships for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

    The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics is agreed to establish a scholarship scheme “Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics – Entrance Scholarships for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants” by use of funding available in the Non-UGC Reserves (Departmental) with effect from 2009-2010. The following regulations shall apply as of 2009/2010:

    1 The award shall be known as “The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Entrance Scholarships for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants”.

    2 Value of each shall be HK$30,000.

    Eligible applicants for the scholarships shall be local full-time undergraduate freshmen who have been admitted to one of the Department's undergraduate programmes other than through the JUPAS route and who have achieved outstanding local/overseas academic achievements comparable to standards set by the City University of Hong Kong for awards of full tuition entrance scholarships for overseas/international/non-local students.

    The maximum number of awards per annum is 5 (one award for each of the following programmes – BACH, BATI, BAL, BACHM and BALS). If no students are found to be of sufficient merit in either one of the programmes, the awards will be given to students of other programmes.

    Nominations from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics will reach the Student Development Services in September/October of the academic year for which the scholarships are designated.

    If in any year no student is found to be of sufficient merit, the award will be withheld.

    CTL Graduation Awards

    The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics is to establish six annual awards (3 each for MALS and MACH) in the University by use of the funding available in the Non-UGC Reserves (Departmental) with effect from 2009-2010. The following regulations shall apply as of 2009/2010::

    1. The award shall be known as “The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Graduation Awards”

    2. Value of each award shall be HK$30,000

    3. Eligibility

      A candidate must satisfy all of the following criteria:

      1. Enrolling as a student of MALS or MACH programme
      2. Graduating from the MALS or MACH programme
      3. Achieving the three highest CGPA among the same graduation cohort of either MALS or MACH programme in the academic year

    4. Ceiling may be raised to accommodate students attaining the same GPA.

    5. Nominations from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics will reach the Student Development Services after the last graduation date as specified by the Academic Calendar of an academic year.

    6. If in any year no student is found to be of sufficient merit, the award will be withheld.

    7. The Awards shall be offered annually until any notice of change is to be received from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

    Remark:
    With an objective to nurture our students and promote a caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU alumni club when they are in employment after graduation.  This term will be incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.

    Tuition Scholarships for Research Degree Students (Non-UGC-funded)

    The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL) has agreed to offer tuition scholarships to full-time non-UGC funded research students of CTL by making use of the funding available in the Departmental Non-UGC Reserves, with effect from the 2009-2010 academic year under the following regulations:

    1. The Scholarships shall be known as the “CTL Tuition Scholarships for Research Degree Students (Non-UGC-funded)”.

    2. The Scholarships shall be offered to Full-time Non-UGC-funded research degree students of the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

    3. All CTL full-time non-UGC-funded research degree students (MPhil/PhD) are eligible to apply for the award.

    4. There shall be a total of 20 awards available for MPhil/PhD students (MPhil: 5; PhD: 15). The value of each scholarship in 2009/10 shall be HK$3,508 pm. The value of each award will be subject to review in 2010/11 and thereafter. The award will be released to the student’s account monthly. The maximum period for the scholarship for an MPhil student is 24 months, for a PhD student is 36 months.

    5. Research Degree Students who have received other types of scholarship to cover tuition fee shall not be eligible for this tuition scholarship.

    6. The Scholarships shall be awarded to students who meet criteria (a) on entry, and meet criteria (b) – (e) after 1 year of study in the Department, and subject to yearly renew:

      (a) have received a good academic result on entry and enrolled in a research degree programme as approved by the University;

      (b) (i) obtain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 with no failures, in all the prescribed courses completed at the time of application; or

           (ii) have an outstanding academic publication record and with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, with no failures, in all the prescribed courses completed at the time of application;

      (c) have good study progress as reported by student’s responsible Supervisors;

      (d) have achieved an outstanding performance for the academic duties as assigned by the Department;

      (e) Year 3 PhD students must have at least one good quality paper published or accepted for publication whilst studying at the University.

    7. Nomination(s) from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics and shall reach the Student Development Services before student’s enrolment or within one month of a new Semester.

    Postgraduate Studentships for Research Degree Students (Non-UGC-funded)

    The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL) has agreed to offer postgraduate studentships to full-time non-UGC funded research students of CTL by making use of the funding available in the Departmental Non-UGC Reserves, with effect from 2009-2010 academic year under the following regulations:

    1. The studentships shall be known as the “CTL Postgraduate Studentships for Research Degree Students (Non-UGC-funded)”.

    2. The studentships shall be offered to Full-time Non-UGC-funded research degree students of the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

    3. Eligibility
    4. All CTL full-time non-UGC funded research degree students (MPhil/PhD) who have obtained at least a bachelor’s degree with second upper class honours (or equivalent) or a good master’s degree before admission are eligible to apply for the studentship.

    5. Exemption from the above may be considered if the student has a good publication record.

    6. Students who are in receipt of Government grants and loans or other awards are also eligible to apply. Decisions on allowing such students to hold the studentship concurrently with other awards will be made on a case-by-case basis.

    7. Value of Award
    8. There will be a total of 20 awards available for MPhil/PhD students (MPhil: 5; PhD: 15). The value of the studentship award should normally be the same as that of the postgraduate studentship for UGC-allocated and UGC-related research students. Awardees will be paid in monthly installments.

    9. The Studentship rates (monthly rates in 2008-09 at HK$13,440 for PhD students and $13,100 for MPhil students) are subject to revision in September of every year, and any revision to the rates will apply to both current and new students.

    10. Duration of the Award
    11. MPhil students will normally be granted studentships for a maximum of two years and PhD students a maximum of three years (irrespective of their entry qualifications), and the studentship award period should not exceed students’ stipulated study period. The commencement of the award shall normally align with a student’s commencement date of study.

    12. The maximum duration of the Studentship for students enrolling in a Joint PhD programme offered by the Department and other institutions will be subject to the terms and conditions as specified in the respective joint agreement.

    13. Studentship Renewal and Periodic Checking
    14. The studentship will be renewed annually, subject to the students’ satisfactory performance.

    15. To be eligible for consideration of a renewal of their studentship, students should attain in their coursework prescribed by the Qualifying Panel a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 (or equivalent) and have had no failure grades in the preceding 12 months. Students’ performance in any academic-related duties, as assigned by the Department, will also be taken into account when being considered for studentship renewal.

    16. Checking on a semester/term basis will be performed and those studentship recipients identified as failing to fulfil the above requirement [i.e. a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 (or equivalent) and have had no failure grades in the preceding 12 months] will have their studentship discontinued.

    17. Conditions of the Award
    18. Studentship recipients must reside in Hong Kong for at least half of the normal period of study. They are normally required to undertake up to six hours of academic-related duties per week or three hours of teaching per week, as assigned by the Department.

    19. Studentship recipients are not employees of the University.

    20. Studentship recipients shall not engage in any paid employment without the prior endorsement of their supervisor and Department and approval of the C/SGSC Chairs. Students who are in breach of this regulation may be required to reimburse the dollar amount of the award to the University.

    21. Discontinuation/Suspension of the Award
    22. A student’s award shall be discontinued in the event of one of the following:

      (a) taking up paid employment without the prior approval of the C/SGSC Chairs;

      (b) unsatisfactory progress of study as reported by the Department;

      (c) unsatisfactory performance in academic-related duties as reported by the Department;

      (d) completion of the examination requirements (including submission of bound thesis);

      (e) termination of candidature;

      (f) withdrawal from study

    23. The award will be suspended in the event of the following:

      (a) during a student’s period of interruption of study;

      (b) for students who fail to settle the required fees by the stipulated deadline.

    Scholarship for International Students (UGC-funded Undergraduate Students)

    Full Tuition Scholarship

    Source of Funding : Departmental Non-UGC Reserve

    Terms and Conditions :

    1. The scholarship is tenable for a maximum of three years or until the completion of the undergraduate programme as enrolled by the student, whichever is the shorter period. The scholarship may be suspended for any period when the student is absent from the University, such as enrolling in a job placement scheme or other interruption.

    2. The scholarship is automatically renewed each year on condition that the student achieves a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) at 3.0 or above by the end of Semester B each year and he/she enrolls in the same programme of study throughout the award period.

    3. Should the student fail to achieve a CGPA at 3.0 by the end of Semester B each year for scholarship renewal, a grace period of one-semester in the following academic year (i.e. Semester A), will be granted. However, should his/her CGPA by the end of Semester A of the following academic year be lower than 3, the scholarship will automatically be terminated with effect from the commencement date of Semester B in that academic year.

    4. The Scholarship shall be offered in terms of wavier of full tuition fee for the year concerned. No cash shall be paid to the recipient.

    5. The student is liable to pay all other expenses, such as student residence fee and fees that the University may charge from time to time.

    6. The student is required to pay all expenses to attend any workshops, studies or training during summer.

    7. The student has to abide by the laws of the HKSAR and the rules and regulations of the University.

    8. The maximum number of awards per annum is 4 (one award for each of the following UGC undergraduate programmes - BACH, BATI, BAL, BACHM). If no students are found to be of sufficient merit in either one of the programmes, the awards will be given to students of other programmes. The value of each award would be $240,000 (ie. $80,000 (full tuition scholarship) x 3 years).

    Half Tuition Scholarship

    Source of Funding : Departmental Non-UGC Reserve

    Terms and Conditions :

    1. The scholarship is tenable for a maximum of three years or until the completion of the undergraduate programme as enrolled by the student, whichever is the shorter period. The scholarship may be suspended for any period when the student is absent from the University, such as enrolling in a job placement scheme or other interruption.

    2. The scholarship is automatically renewed each year on condition that the student achieves a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) at 3.0 or above by the end of Semester B each year and he/she enrolls in the same programme of study throughout the award period.

    8. The maximum number of awards per annum is 4 (one award for each of the following UGC undergraduate programmes - BACH, BATI, BAL, BACHM). If no students are found to be of sufficient merit in either one of the programmes, the awards will be given to students of other programmes. The value of each award would be $120,000 (ie. $40,000 (half tuition scholarship) x 3 years).

    Full Tuition Scholarships for Mainland Students of Taught MA Programmes

    To help mainland students with high academic standing and boost the interaction between Hong Kong students and their mainland counterparts, the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistic has agreed to establish tuition scholarships for Mainland students of taught MA programmes ( MALS/MACH Mainland students ).

    Regulations

    1. The award shall be known as “CTL Full Tuition Scholarships for Mainland Students of Taught MA Programmes”.

    2. There will be a total of 5 Full Tuition Scholarships: HK$63,000 each

    3. Award winners shall be Mainland students in their first year of studies of either MALS or MACH programme.

    4. Award winners must fulfill all of the following selection criteria:

      (i) academic performance (GPA >=80% of the base, possibly publications)

      (ii) admission to a CTL taught MA programme

      (iii) Provision of two referee’s reports

      If needed, an interview may be conducted on all the potential candidates.

    5. The Scholarship shall be offered in terms of wavier of full tuition fee for the year concerned. No cash shall be paid to the recipient.
    6. The student is liable to pay all other expenses, such as student residence fee and fees that the University may charge from time to time.

    7. The student is required to pay all expenses to attend any workshops, studies or training during summer.

    8. The student has to abide by the laws of the HKSAR and the rules and regulations of the University.

    9. Nominations from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics will reach the Student Development Services in September/October of the academic year for which the scholarships are designated.

    10. If in any year no student is found to be of sufficient merit, the award will be withheld.

    11. The Scholarship shall be offered annually until any notice of change is to be received from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

    12. The award of the scholarship is conditional upon the student continuing to be a registered student at the University during the award year. A scholarship recipient will be required to refund the scholarship in full in the case that he/she ceases his/her student status at the University within the award year.

    CTL Outstanding Performance Scholarships

    The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics is to offer 32 annual Outstanding Performance Scholarships (8 scholarships for each of the following UGC undergraduate programmes – BACH, BATI, BAL, BACHM) in the University by use of the funding available in the Non-UGC Reserves (Departmental) with effect from 2009-2010.  The following regulations shall apply as of 2009/2010:

    1. The award shall be known as “The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Outstanding Performance Scholarships”

    2. Value of each scholarship shall be HK$30,000

    3. Eligibility

  • Applicants shall be full-time UGC-funded undergraduate students who have been admitted to one of the Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Department’s undergraduate programmes, i.e. BA (Honours) in Chinese, BA (Honours) in Translation and Interpretation, BA (Honours) in Linguistics and Language Technology, and BA (Honours) in Cultural and Heritage Management.
  • Either year one or year two students of the programmes who have received a GPA of 3.5 or above and with no failure of any courses by the end of the academic year of their study (i.e. Semester B).

  • 4. Ceiling may be raised to accommodate students attaining the same GPA.

    5. Nominations from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics will reach the Student Development Services after the confirmation of Semester B assessment results of each academic year.

    6. If in any year no student is found to be of sufficient merit, the award will be withheld.

    7. The Scholarship shall be offered annually until any notice of change is to be received from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

    Scholarships for Outbound Exchange Students

    Regulations

    The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL) has agreed to establish scholarships in the University with her Non-UGC Reserves in the amount of HK$249,000 commencing the academic year 2009/10 subject to the following regulations.

    1. The Scholarships shall be known as “The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Scholarships for Outbound Exchange Students”.

    2. The value of each scholarship shall be range from HK$4,500 to HK$20,000, depending on the applicants’ academic performance, TOEFL/IELTS score and the country where the exchange programme will take place.

    3. The scholarship recipients should:

      • be CTL full-time students and/or non-local students who have been selected by the University to participate in the University’s/College’s/Department’s exchange programme and are officially accepted by overseas partner institutions to take part in the exchange programme for at least one semester;

      • be regular students of the University’s bachelor’s degree programmes and have completed at least one year full-time study in a bachelor’s degree programme before commencing the exchange programme;

    4. Note
      *Non-UGC funded students of CTL who are selected for the exchange programmes will receive sponsorships by the department equiavlent to the amounts according to different destinations that UGC funded students will receive from the Student Exchange Fund for the exchange programmes.

    5. The payment of the 80% of the scholarship value shall be arranged when the recipients have settled their tuition fees and other study related fee of the same academic year before they set off to the designated universities. In case of non-UGC funded students, they should pay the amount which is equivalent to the minimum credit units charged for a full-time student, i.e. 12 credit units per semester). As soon as the notification from CTL reaches SDS, SDS will inform Finance Office to effect the payment. Upon the completion of the student exchange programme, recipients should submit the transcript and relevant receipts of their exchange studies to CTL/SDS for reimbursement of the remaining 20% of the approved scholarship within two months after their return to Hong Kong.

    6. The nominations will be made by a Selection Panel as designated by the Head of Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

    7. Nominations from CTL will be submitted to the Student Development Services when the selection exercise is completed by April and October of each year.

    8. The University reserves the right to demand for the partial/full refund of the scholarship from the recipient should he/she fail to complete the exchange programme.

    9. The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics will review the implementation of the Scholarship at the end of December 2009 to decide whether or not it will continue for the following academic year.
